RPFSS Annual Meeting and Lunch, December 10, 2015

The Real Property and Financial Services Section of the Hawaii State Bar Association will hold its Annual Meeting and buffet lunch from Noon to 1:30 pm on Thursday, December 10, 2015, at the Plaza Club, Crown Room, 900 Fort Street Mall, 20th Floor.  Followed by an optional tour for those who register.

We are pleased to inform you that our guest speaker will be Paul Woolford, AIA, IIDA, LEED® AP BD+C, at HOK, a global design, architecture, engineering and planning firm, and Joe Ferraro, co-founder of Ferraro Choi and Associates, a leading sustainable design architectural, interior design and research firm.

Mr. Woolford, together with Mr. Ferraro, designed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Daniel K. Inouye Regional Center at Pearl Harbor. The LEED Gold sustainable design is the most environmentally innovative national historic landmark in the United States. It involves significant adaptive reuse of two historic World War II era aircraft hangars, drawing inspiration from the ecology of Hawaii. The building’s sustainable features include a skylight diffuser system that virtually eliminates the need for artificial light during the day and a gray water capturing system that flushes toilets and irrigates the native landscaping. Honolulu’s first Passive Cooling system eliminates the need for conventional mechanical cooling and air conveyance. A hydronic system pulls water from deep below the sea bed into chilled coils atop the roof of the building. There, the prevailing sea breezes pass over these cool coils and create a system of natural ventilation that drops the cooled, fresh air supply into vertical “thermal chimneys” and through a displacement system of raised floors. The result is a building that ventilates its public and private spaces using no mechanical fans and using 100 percent outside air.

For those who are interested, we have arranged a group tour of the Daniel K. Inouye Regional Center following the Annual Meeting.  The optional tour will be at 2:30 pm on December 10 and will be approximately one hour.  At this time, an arranged group tour is the only way for visitors to tour the Center.  Since the Center is located on Ford Island, an advance security clearance is required.  If you are interested in joining this group tour of the Center, please RSVP for the optional tour by Friday, November 6 by calling or emailing Connilyn Rojas at (808) 544-6759 or and provide your email address, your first and last names, your date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number.  Please also indicate if you prefer to drive yourself to and from the Center or if you would be interested in group transportation to and from the Center.  If there are at least 20 people who are interested in group transportation, a bus will be arranged to pick up passengers from the Plaza Club at 1:30 pm and drive to the Center for the 2:30 pm tour, then drive everyone back to the Plaza Club after the tour (approximate arrival time at the Plaza Club if there are no traffic delays will be 4:00 pm).
